William Foster Johnson MM, DCM and Bar

On this day, 100 years ago, Great Uncle Will - William Foster Johnson, MM, DCM and Bar who 'single-handedly tracked down and killed an enemy sniper dressed in British uniform' died of wounds at Etaples Casualty Clearing Station, France.

He was my my grandfather's uncle, his mother's brother. What little we know of his life comes from the scant record of his pre-war service with the North Eastern Railway and the small amount of information that comes from what survives of his military record.

Yet this man was quite clearly a hero.

We will remember him. And them.

Lest we forget.
